Review by

Battlesword have stood for melodic death metal made in Germany for 23 years. Their last long player And Death Cometh upon Us caused a lot of cheering from genre fans and several magazines in 2019, now the band presents us with Towards The Unknown their fourth studio album.

This time, too, the combo from North Rhine-Westphalia mixes Scandinavian old-school sound with lots of melodyath and a fat portion of groove, for which none other than Dan Swanö was hired for the mastering. As a bonus, the band is also including the three songs from the long-out-of-print maxi The 13th Black Crusade on the new album, which have been remastered for this purpose. Long-time fans will certainly grab it for that reason alone, but even those who don't know the band should definitely risk an ear.

All trademarks and strengths combined

First of all: If you don't know what to do with the current career of former melodeath heroes like In Flames or Amon Amarth and prefer to put on their old records instead, you'll have fun with Battlesword . The band has remained true to their genre and still plays the kind of melodic death metal that conquered the world from Scandinavia in the 1990s.

The previously released song Terra Combusta should be mentioned here as an audio sample. Here melodic guitar lines meet driving drum beats and grim growls, or to put it another way: Here all the trademarks and strengths of this genre are thrown around your ears in five and a half minutes. The proof is HERE .

musical continuity

All in all , Towards The Unknown is primarily set in the groovy mid-tempo, whereby the song The Shores of I particularly stands out and is a highlight of the record. If you prefer something faster, you should listen to Backstabber . With Hound of Hades, however, they prove that Battlesword can also write more intricate songs.

Battlesword will put a smile on the face of any old-school melodeath fan with Towards The Unknown . Here genre enthusiasts are served from start to finish - and in such a high quality that the album should also be interesting for less genre-savvy metalheads.
